Episode 79: Never Send a Boy King to Do a Man's Job
February 21st, 2021 | 1 hr 51 mins
1970s, 70s, big store, con game, egyptomania, james garner, jim rockford, p.i, racing, richie brockelman, rockford files, television, tv
Nathan and Eppy complete the Richie Brockelman duology with S5E19-20, Never Send a Boy King to Do a Man's Job. Richie's dad has been muscled out of the family printing business by an unscrupulous villain. The only way he can see to get it back is to run a con game on the mark... and that's where Jim comes in. Split into two episodes for syndication, this is another 2-hour-timeslot episode which gives us plenty of breathing room to appreciate all of the work that goes into a "big store" con game. This is really a wonderful episode, and we break it down in terms of the con game strategy Jim and Richie use before going into the scenes. Highly recommended!

Episode 46: Counter Gambit
March 24th, 2019 | 1 hr 19 mins
1970s, 70s, angel, con game, james garner, jim rockford, p.i, pearl necklace, rockford files, television, thirst, tv
Nathan and Eppy discuss S1E16 Counter Gambit. Jim is hired by an unsavory acquaintance to find a woman, which he quickly realizes is a cover for some kind of valuable that this woman may or may not have with her. Once Jim does find her, however, the situation quickly becomes more complicated. This is a con game episode, and we really enjoyed the twists and turns of the con, and (as titled) the counter-con. Of particular delight is the first regular-season appearance of Angel Martin! If you can see this one cold, you should - there's a lot to appreciate once you know the story, but the layers of misdirection are deftly handled and worth experiencing at full effect, if possible!

70s, con game, dual registry, get the crew together, halibut, james garner, jim rockford, scheme, the rockford files, tv
Nathan and Eppy discuss S3E12 There's One in Every Port. Rockford thought he was helping out a friend, but it turns out he was conned! Now he has to assemble a crew, turn the mark and con his "old friend" Eddy in order to pay back the mob - before time runs out. This is a wonderful con game romp of an episode!

Episode 11: A Portrait of Elizabeth

70s, analysis, beth davenport, con game, criminal mastermind, detective, jim rockford, the rockford files, tv
Nathan and Eppy discuss S2E16 A Portrait of Elizabeth. Beth brings a new client (and her new boyfriend) to Jim to get some help, but it turns out that Dave has a nefarious scheme of his own. This episode effortlessly weaves together the emotional connection of Beth and Jim, Jim's efforts to discover Dave's plot, and Beth's professional skills - it's truly a gem of an episode that's shot right to top of our "must-see" list!

Episode 10: Chicken Little Is A Little Chicken
May 14th, 2017 | 1 hr 31 mins
70s, analysis, angel martin, con game, detective, fake death, pizza, the rockford files, tv
Nathan and Eppy discuss S2E9 Chicken Little Is A Little Chicken. Angel asks Jim Rockford for a little help collecting some money - but before he knows it, Jim is orchestrating a way-too-complicated shell game to keep two rival mob bosses from planting both him and Angel at the bottom of the LA river. This episode has it all and we really highly recommend it!
